Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses on mental health.
A doctor that practices Psychiatry is known as a Psychiatrist. A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor that treats mental, behavior, and emotional problems. They are qualified to diagnose mental and physical aspects of the psychological issues.
Substance abuse is also in their scope of care. They are qualified to order tests and lab work. A Psychiatrist will take patient feedback, family history, and medical testing to determine the patient’s mental state. Once the doctor gets an idea of the physiological problem, they will form a treatment plan.
Psychiatrists use a variety of treatments to help with psychological conditions. Depending on the needs the treatments can range from medications to interventions to therapies. Psychiatrists can work in a variety of settings from private practice to hospitals to clinics.
Psychiatrists and Psychologists are not the same. A Psychiatrist is a trained medical doctor that completed medical school. They can prescribe medications, order tests, and perform procedures like any other general practice doctor.
Psychologists, on the other hand, do not have a medical degree nor can they practice as general medical doctors practice. A psychiatrist can be thought of as a medical doctor with a specialty in mental health.
