Physical Medicine focus on treatment in a variety of the musculoskeletal system including muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilaginous structures. Physiatrists (PM&R) emphasize the individual’s ability to be as functional as possible and as pain-free as possible to improve their quality of life.
Normally practicing as a medical doctor or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, physiatrists work in many settings like hospitals, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation hospitals, and skilled nursing facilities. Treatments provided by physiatrists include medications, injections, therapies, exercising, devices, and pain modulative modalities. The assessment looks at weakness, diminished or affected sensation, flaccid or spastic muscles and implementation of diagnostic testing is also used by physiatrists for correct diagnoses
